Do 15-30 Mins of This Everyday27th March 2017 by Suz • No comments
These days it’s a win for most of us if we remember to eat and get to where we’re going on time. There is so much being thrown at us – constant deadlines, family responsibilities, social distractions, 24/7 media updates, you name it – our time to focus and set aside time for personal growth is becoming evermore difficult.
But it’s not all doom and gloom!
By reading/listening to audio books/podcasts for 15-30 mins a day can do wonders for our personal and business growth.
And the best part is you can do it while you work out, while you unwind in bed, or sit on the train/bus. EVERYBODY can find at least 15 minutes to get this done.
And no, reading statuses on Facebook or Twitter doesn’t count. Reading about advances in your field, listening to an interview by a leader in your industry, or learning more about the history of what it is you now do is extremely beneficial for:
– a deeper appreciation for your passion and your “why”
– an edge over others who won’t take the time to learn what’s around them
– sparking creativity and motivation to create new content
I was listening to a great podcast episode from WeSpin – Why Artists Need Mentors – with special guest Sebastiaan Hooft.
Hooft explained, much like I’ve been saying for years, that musicians struggle to maintain a prosperous career in the industry because they don’t look at themselves as an entrepreneur.
You can’t truly “escape the 9 to 5.” Sure, you can change your hours and decide what projects you take on, but as a musician (just like any other entrepreneur) you have multiple departments to manage – finance, branding/marketing, legal, touring, recording, to name a few.
While the goal is to delegate many of these things, in the meantime is it crucial that you first know the basics in order to be able to monitor what your team is doing. At the end of the day, it’s all on your shoulders.
So start taking matters into your own hands: teach yourself what you can, and ask someone else to teach you want you can’t.
Not sure where to begin?
I’ve got you. I’ve posted plenty of articles on my blog discussing the various aspects of the industry, I’ve uploaded multiple videos with tips to help you, PLUS I released a video course on copyrights to take at your own pace (total time to complete: 1 hour).
No matter what tools you decide to use, just make sure you use something. Listen. Learn. Leverage what you know for more power. Remember, the more you know, the more you rock.
So rock on!
