Break more rules! Here’s how24th July 2017 by Suz • No comments
I spoke on a panel called “The Future of the Music Industry” and I brought back with me some great advice from the panelists. The main takeaway was that it’s the “Wild West” out there, as industry veteran Paul Sacksman said.
My guy Lou Plaia from ReverbNation pointed out that labels don’t create someone’s following, they come knocking once the following is already there. “We (Atlantic Records) didn’t sign Hootie & The Blowfish until they were HUGE in the Southeast.”
So how does a DIY artist figure out their own path?
There is no “right way” to do it, but there are smarter ways. As in any other industry, you must first learn all the rules before you can break them. You can’t think outside the box if you don’t first understand how things operate within the box.
You do this by getting informed. Do your research. Work smarter not harder. Once you and your team have a handle on what’s what, use your God-given creativity to figure out your own path.
Understand the trends in music sales and THEN figure out how YOUR fans want their music. Don’t make decisions based on what others are doing, base it on what works for YOU. But you can’t know what works until you know what your options are, so do your homework.
The artists who get noticed are the ones doing something different and who are smart enough to leverage what they have to the RIGHT people. Check out my video clip DIY Does NOT Mean Do It Alone to see what else was said.
